Gordon of Mak-A-Din

Gordon Mak-A-DinHi  I am Gordon, I was born in Falkirk Royal on November 4th 1965. When I was in my early teens all my friends were into guitars and they talked me into trying to learn. The friends in question were, Stuart and Gary two brothers who came from a musical family.
I lost interest in the guitar within days but I always knew I could sing. My Dad passed away on fathers day 1997 and that is when I looked to music to escape. I’ve always wished my Dad could see me now, I am certain that he would be so proud of me. In 1997 I met my first singing and band partner Robert who taught me the basics of the guitar. I went on to teach myself and within the first year Robert and I had our first gig in the “Vic Inn” Carronshore .
We went on to form the band “The Shoresmen” and had many gigs together but we split up 5 or 6 years later. I then stopped gigging for a short time and went to see Pure Malt playing at their gigs. I knew Gordon and Tam for many years and was at school with Tam. I started to fill in for Tam now and then and also the three of us gigged together.  Gordon and I went on to form a band Avonstray and produced a CD together.
I also gigged with Kevin from Schilrum, we called ourselves Eresky. Then I met Dougie; my previous partner although I knew his family for years through the motor trade; which both his Dad and I were in. We teamed up together  about a year ago and since forming Mak-A-Din the work continues to come in at a very fast rate. Although changes are always inevitable I continue to strive to enhance Mak-A-Din's presence and maintain a strong repertoire of songs. I am looking forward to many years of gigging as Mak-A-Din and engaging with our audiences.

My name is Davy I was born on April 30th 1961 in Falkirk Infirmary.  My maternal grandfather was a beautiful singer and my dad was the side drummer with Bo’ ness Federation Pipe band, so maybe some of their talent has rubbed off on me.

My biggest influence was John Day a fantastic accordionist and pianist whom I worked with for many years, unfortunately John past away a few years ago. I feel I carry his love of music and determination with me to this day.  My good friend Archie McDougall taught me the basics of the guitar and for the past 31 years he has given me invaluable support.

I have played with various bands over the last 25yrs, one of them being “Ocean Drive” (a 6 piece combo) with whom I played the Hotel and Social Club circuit. It was a very enjoyable experience that lasted 16 yrs. We decided to call it a day on December 16th 2006 and still to this day we all remain good friends. In February 2007 I teamed up with my old friend Jim Derry and worked the pub Circuit under the name of “Harlequin”  After years of playing club/cabaret music I decided to follow my patriotic heart and started playing what I always wanted to play “Scottish Folk Music”. In November 2007 I teamed up with Gordon, a friend for many years with whom I am very much looking forward to progressing a future with “Mak-A-Din”
